Bermuda Run, NC

Bermuda Run is a town in Davie County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,725 at the 2010 census.[3] It was incorporated in 1999 as a fully gated residential community near country clubs and golf courses like the Bermuda Run Country Club, Oak Valley Golf Club, and Tanglewood Park. In 2000, the town annexed into neighboring Hillsdale, picking up a commercial district. The town rests on the western bank of the Yadkin River along U.S. Route 158 and North Carolina Highway 801. Interstate 40 provides express access to Winston-Salem, the town's nearest urban center. In 2012 Kinderton Village was voluntarily annexed by the town of Bermuda Run. The English colony (now designated a British Overseas Territory) of Bermuda, or the Somers Isles, was settled in 1609 by the survivors of the Virginia Company's flagship, the Sea Venture. The Royal Charter of the company and the boundaries of Virginia were extended in 1612 to include Bermuda, although administration of the archipelago was transferred to a new company with the same shareholders, the Somers Isles Company, in 1615, which controlled Bermuda until 1684. Whereas the Virginia colony struggled to survive, Bermuda quickly became thriving and populous. Its limited land mass, however, meant there were few prospects for many members of its rapidly multiplying working class, and roughly 10,000 Bermudians would emigrate during the 17th and 18th Centuries, primarily to Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia. This included the establishment of the city of Charleston and the colony of South Carolina under William Sayle in 1670. One result of this exodus is the appearance of the name Bermuda in many locations in the American South where Bermudians settled, from Bermuda Hundred, VA to Bermuda Island, in the Albemarle Sound, North Carolina. The name Bermuda Run was also previously used for areas of what are now Colonial Heights and Hopewell in Virginia.

Ariston Farm was built by David and China Lybrook in the early 1920′s from sketches Lybrook casually drew on paper. The house was built from stones found on the farm and the wood was cut and cured on the farm. What was once a major cattle and horse farm became a luxurious retirement community, a private country club and golf course, and the newest town in Davie County.

When Billy Satterfield, a plumber’s helper from nearby Clemmons, looked across the river in his search for reasonably priced land to build his own country club, he found a farm for sale. Price: $1,000 an acre. Armed with artists renderings of what the club would be, he sold 175 lots for $10,000 each. Buyers paid the $10,000, then their lot location was assigned by conducting a drawing. Arnold Palmer took the first lot and Bermuda Run Country Club was born.

In the 1980′s the country club was sold with the undeeded land to developers who purchased an additional 234 acres of the Lybrook farm (giving Bermuda Run a total of 900+ acres) on the Davie County side of the Yadkin River. The community underwent an expansion that added a plush retirement center, luxury condominiums and another nine holes of golf. Recently, there has been further expansion of the community when another club house and golf course were added along with additional home sites.

The Town of Bermuda Run incorporated July 1, 1999, as one of only three gated communities in the State to be designated an official municipality. Since that time, the Town has experienced steady, deliberate growth through numerous commercial annexations. Most recently, the Town completed a voluntary annexation that incorporates the Kinderton Village residential community into the Town limits.

The Town maintains nearly 22 miles of streets and provides street maintenance, street lighting, law enforcement, planning and zoning and sanitary sewer service to a portion of residents that live in the Bermuda Run Country Club gated community. Davie County Public Utilities provides water service to Town residents and businesses and the surrounding East Davie area. Sanitary Sewer service is also provided to the majority of residential and all commercial properties within the Town limits by Davie County Public Utilities.

In addition to Wake Forest Baptist Medical CenterBrenner’s Children’s Hospital and Forsyth Regional Medical Center – all just 20 minutes away – a brand-new Wake Forest medical campus is currently under development right here in the Town of Bermuda Run, which will include physician offices, outpatient services and a hospital.

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center will open the first of two buildings on its West Campus in August, bringing the world-class services of one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers to Davie County.The four-story, 60,000 square foot building—visible from Interstate 40 at exit 180—will house physician offices, physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, and a pharmacy.

Orthopaedics will be the primary specialty service offered at the West Campus along with cardiology, ophthalmology and neurology. The research conducted by Wake Forest Baptist indicates that these services are needed by residents to enable them to have more convenient access to quality healthcare.

One of the four floors will be devoted to orthopaedics. Wake Forest Baptist physicians will provide diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical services for patients with knee, shoulder, hip and hand problems, as well as conditions related to sports medicine and podiatry. Having physical therapy in the building will add convenience for patients.

For the first time, a cardiologist will have an office in Davie County. In addition to the cardiologist, cardiac rehabilitation will be available in the building. Also, an ophthalmologist and neurologist will have offices in the building. Our eye physician provides complete eye exams without a referral.

In October, Medical Plaza 2 will open, completing the first phase of the West Campus. Medical Plaza 2 is a 101,000 square foot building that will offer 24/7 emergency services, outpatient surgery and diagnostic imaging. Medical Plaza 2 will have a full service laboratory, pre-operative assessment clinic, diagnostic cardiology and neurology. Diagnostic services including imaging, lab, cardiology and neurology, as well as physical therapy and cardiac rehabilitation services are available to any patients with a physician’s order.

With the $100 million investment and approximately 175 jobs, Wake Forest Baptist Health will be a catalyst for the economic growth of Davie County.

Bermuda Run is situated just off Interstate 40 on the eastern end of Davie County. Davie County is in the western Piedmont, the Heartland of North Carolina. It is surrounded by Yadkin County to the north, Forsyth County to the northeast, Davidson County to the east, Iredell County to the west and Rowan County to the south. With a population of 2,750, the Town enjoys the benefits of a small town atmosphere while being conveniently located within minutes of Winston-Salem.
