How far are you willing to go? I mean in terms of cost, life style changes, and methods of attack. There are three ways to get into a home.
- Doors
- Windows
- Penetrate the structure
Doors
Turn the lock and come in! Two locks of which one is a deadbolt. Burglars normally just kick the door in. How come? NO Tools needed. At most, a one inch hole in a strikeplate within the doorjam. Screws for the strikeplate need to longer than two inches. A steel door and doorjam would be ideal. if not, then add a piece of steel strapping to the doorjamb along side the strikeplate. The strength of wood and its thickness is what stands between you and the burglar opening the door with a kick. Good locks may help keep the thieves out but don't count on it.
Windows
Don't have windows big enough to crawl through at ground level! To keep out determined folk install shutters or bars. In any case, get a glass breakage detector installed in the room with glass windows or doors. When the glass breaks the alarm sounds. Just like doors, windows should lock from the inside.
Penetration
Today the power tool rules. Burglars have them too! Like the homes of the three little pigs brick or stone is best.
If you invest in locks use them by locking them. Don't provide hiding places for strangers around your home. Clear away shubbery that could hide a person or block view. Be able to view whose at the door without opening it. House alarms are nice. They notify police that someone broke in. They don't keep anyone out of the home! Alarm systems should work if power and telephone landline is cut. Alarm systems have battery and cell technology backup. When the alarm sounds where do you go? A safe room is ideal. This is a room with a working cell phone, a firearm or weapon of self-defense, a deadbolt lock on the entry door, bullet proof cover would also be nice.
Home security used to be simple, just lock your doors. Now the burglars are high tech equipped. Below are some links to product of interest.
