Iran Test-Fires Missile Able to Duck Radar

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran's military said Friday it successfully test-fired a missile not detectable by radar that can use multiple warheads to hit several targets simultaneously, a development that raised concerns in the United States and Israel.

Three Earthquakes Level Iranian Villages

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Earthquakes and aftershocks rattled western Iran one after another, flattening villages and sending frightened homeowners into the streets. By Friday morning 70 people were dead, 1,200 wounded, and thousands homeless.

Iran is very prone to earthquakes.  The worlds greatest fear with nuclear Power plants is an accident which causes a melt down.  Can you think of a more dangerous situation than  this?

We don't know how close he is today, but a Saddam Hussein with a nuclear weapon is a grave, grave threat to America and our friends and allies.

George Bush, 11/12/2002

"We have now been there for some two months and been covering [Iraq] in ever wider sweeps and we haven't found any smoking guns."

Hans Blix, 1/9/2003

"Iran armed with a nuclear weapon poses a grave threat to the security of the world."

George Bush, 3/16/2006

(AP) Former U.N. chief weapons inspector Hans Blix said Monday that Iran is a least five years away from developing a nuclear bomb, leaving time to peacefully negotiate a settlement. [...]

"We have time on our side in this case. Iran can't have a bomb ready in the next five years," Blix was quoted as saying.

Hans Blix, 4/3/2006

I wonder how many Americans and Iranians will dies because of Bush's insanity this time?

David, It's not just Bush but the whole world who are concerned about this. It is merely that the whole world is looking to US to solve their problem as always. I truly hope that we pass on that! As for your question "How many Americans.....will have to die for this insanity....?" I'll ask you David, how many will die if it isn't "insanity"?

Apr. 4, 2006 - Iran is 5 years away from a nuclear weapon at best

Attacking Iran now will be disasterous and will result in tens of thousands of dead and WILL bring suicide bombers to America. It will also destablize the ME.

The real country to worry about is Pakistan.

Pakistan is VERY ANGRY over the Bush nuclear deal with India. Pakistan considers India to be its mortal enemy and the Bush is giving India cart blanche to start making hundreds of atomic weapons.

Pakistan HAS atomic weapons and will also begin to make more. Pakistan is VERY friendly to anti-American governments and groups and has already given nuclear technology and materials to these groups.

Why is a country with NO nuclear weapons that hates America more of a threat than a country WITH nuclear weapons that hates America?

The whole world is watching the US, but in fear that it will do something incredibly stupid like attack Iran. The whole world is watching in abject horror as the US destroys the nuclear non-proliferation treaty by its deal with India.

Could we at least be afraid of real threats instead of make believe ones? I had these same arguments about Iraq and was ridiculed for "wanting the terrorists to win".

If peace is what we are interested in then Bush should do two things:

1) Back of Iran and stop making threats which only justifes it feeling that it needs to defend itself.

2) Cancel the deal with India.

It has been my opinion for over a decade that if a nuclear war breaks out in the ME, it will be between Pakistan and India.

I do not agree with you that the world is concerned with what we will do about Iran because we will do nothing simply because we can't. Our resources are stretched too thin and Bush is in so much trouble here at home he will never get the go ahead from Congress to attack Iran. Iran with it's current government is a big threat to the world and the world leaders know this. David, don't you read newspapers from other countries? They are all on-line. The newspapers are reporting their fears about Iran to their own people, not their fears of US.*******India deal was a mistake in my opinion and will not pass Congress. I too have seen war with India and Pakistan as a real threat for years and am only surprised that it hasn't already taken place. China however is keeping a lid on that one since they looked the other way and allowed them to get nuclear in the first place just to threaten the West. They also allowed N. Korea get nuclear for the same reason. Now that China is moving into the 21st. century and capitalism they realize their mistake and how nuclear war between India and Pakistan will impact them. It is a mess but no possibility that US will do any more because Bush has lost his power all over the world. Congress will end up with censure, impeachment or even possible accusations of war crimes against the whole bloody Bush gang if they don't cool it. Am hoping there will be a real shake up and turn over in the White House "ruling junta".

Apr. 4, 2006 - Planning under way to attack Iran

Yes, I read other newspapers such as The Guardian, The Telegraph, Irish Times, South China Daily News, Sidney Morning Herald, La Corriera Della Serra (in Italian), Daily Mail, and various English language editions of papers from the Israel, Dubai, India, China, Russia and South America.

In the Telegraph we read: The Government is to hold secret talks with defence chiefs tomorrow to discuss possible military strikes against Iran.

A high-level meeting will take place in the Ministry of Defence at which senior defence chiefs and government officials will consider the consequences of an attack on Iran.

It is believed that an American-led attack, designed to destroy Iran's ability to develop a nuclear bomb, is "inevitable" if Teheran's leaders fail to comply with United Nations demands to freeze their uranium enrichment programme.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/04/02/wiran02.xml&sSheet=/portal/2006/04/02/ixportaltop.html

The British MoD is denying that planning is taking place, but since Blair has lied as much as Bush, it is hard to believe anything they say.

I sincerely believe you underestimate Bush's determination to go to war. He doesn't plan on sending in the infantry, he plans on "surgical strikes" on "suspected nuclear weapons facilities". He'll have all sorts of reasons to justify this action. He will not go to congress for further "authorization", since he will claim that congress already gave it to him.

I hope you are right, but my instinct tells me no. Hell, even Las Vegas is making book on an attack:

Bush is not harmless or powerless. Congressional leaders have made clear they will support Bush and his policies, no matter how destructive (McCain has now sided with the Christian Right in order to curry their support for his campaign and Frist flip-flopped on the Dubai port deal and backed Bush). Cheney, Rice and Rumsfeld are still running the war machine, and they want to attack Iran.

Condi Rice is in Britain making all the same noises that Powell made in the run up to Iraq.

Yes David, The Telegraph reported exactly what I said, they are trying to get US to do the job for the world. But, I think it will ultimately be Israel who makes the strike because: 1. they are much better at getting things done correctly than any others, 2. their intelligence in the area is better since their spies can blend with the population and have the language/idioms and cultural trappings to get into situations others can not. 3. they have nothing to lose and everything, like life!, to gain by talking Iran out of the game, 4. they are hated by Muslims anyhow.

Something will have to be done before November and with the present controversy in country and in Congress if Bush does anything the Republicans will lose the election big time. Even Bush and Co. don’t want the Republicans to lose the power because it would be bad for business friends. No, they will look out for their own interests first. What are the odds in Vegas now?
Rice is in England and Iraq trying to get the factions to work together before the country divided into the “natural” factions they were until the West tried to make the groups (Sunni, Shiite, Kurds) one big country under leader they could control. Same goes for Iran--a forged country that didn’t want to be under the West’s picked ruler. What a mess the European countries have made in so many parts of the world with their empire building. Thank goodness the US was too weak for most of the colonization period to do much more than grab the southwest from Mexico. The shenanigans of the 19th. century are simply coming to roost now .

Apr. 4, 2006 - I don't see anything in the story which

indicates "they" want us to do the job for the world. Which also begs the question: Who are "they"?

The story mentions the IAEA and the UN, but they are are not advocating attacking Iran.

The paper comments that the fact that the meeting is taking place means that Jack Straw lied to the public when he said last month that an attack on Iran was "inconceivable".

(To quote Inigo Montoya in "The Princess Bride", "I don't think that word means what you think it means.")

If Israel is involved in the attack, you might as well kiss the idea of any peace in the ME goodbye for the next 50 years. If you recall, Bush Sr. bribed Israel to stay out of Bush War I and not retaliate for the pathetic missile attack launched by Iraq. He did that because he knew that if Israel got involved, it would galvanize and inflame every Arab in the Region.

To say that Israel has "nothing to lose" is to ignore the fact that taking part in the attack will immediately result in riots and suicide bombings throughout Israel.

Las Vegas currently has the odds at 10:1 against an attack by April 16.

Rice cannot stop what has already happened in Iraq, civil war along secteraian lines.

The US has made a major mess of its little forays into empire building in the last 100 years. Our interference in South America, Central America, the Phillipines, Haiti, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Iraq, and Iran (I'm sure I've missed a few) has resulted in millions of deaths. So I don't see how you can give a pass to the US and chastise Europe, especially when Europe's tampering in the 20th-21st century was usually in cahoots with the US.

US foreign policy for the last 100 years has come home to roost. The US repeatedly propped up and supported murderous Right-wing regimes. When these people were inevitably overthrown, the governments that came to power had a passionate (and quite justified) hatred for America.

Saddam Hussein came to power with US aid. He attacked Iran and used chemical weapons with US assiastance.

The Taliban came to power with US aid. We trained them, armed them and supplied them all through the 80's so they could fight the Soviets. Osama bin Laden was one of OUR boys at one time.

Now we are backing tyrants or tyrannical governments in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and numerous ex-Soviet republics. In the future, these decision will come home to roost.

Bottom line: We were lied into Gulf War I, then Gulf War II, and now we are being lied into Iran.
